We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

We’re really bad at knowing what will make us happy.

I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’
Acts 20:33-35

Bottom Line

A generous life is a joyful life.

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

How to experience the joy of generosity

  1. Choose to be generous
  2. Set your expectations appropriately
  3. Be open to however God wants to bless you
  4. Allow God to define what are wants and what are needs in your life
I want each of you to take plenty of time to think it over, and make up your own mind what you will give. That will protect you against sob stories and arm-twisting. God loves it when the giver delights in the giving.
2 Corinthians 9:7

And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.

Action Steps

Pray

  • Ask God to soften your heart regarding generosity.
  • Ask God to show you opportunities to be more generous.

Practice

  • Take out a sum of money in cash (or gift card) and put it in your wallet. Look for an opportunity to bless someone this week.
  • Reflect on how it went.
