Thursday Prayer Guide

September 3, 2024

Be Still

Find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted. Get comfortable. Let your body relax and your mind quiet down. Take a few deep breaths and then ask God to make his presence known to you. Be still. Take some time to sit and soak up God’s presence.

Prayer of Approach

Our God, sovereign Lord and master of all creation, in the hour let us hear again your call, always inviting us to serve by your side in your kingdom work. Equip us, Lord, to serve you well, in the spirit and power of Christ, Amen.

Psalm 71

In you, Lord, I have taken refuge;
   let me never be put to shame.
In your righteousness, rescue me and deliver me;
   turn your ear to me and save me.
Be my rock of refuge,
   to which I can always go;
give the command to save me,
   for you are my rock and my fortress.
Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,
   from the grasp of those who are evil and cruel.
For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord,
   my confidence since my youth.
From birth I have relied on you;
   you brought me forth from my mother’s womb.
   I will ever praise you.
I have become a sign to many;
   you are my strong refuge.
My mouth is filled with your praise,
   declaring your splendor all day long.
Do not cast me away when I am old;
   do not forsake me when my strength is gone.
For my enemies speak against me;
   those who wait to kill me conspire together.
They say, “God has forsaken him;
   pursue him and seize him,
   for no one will rescue him.”
Do not be far from me, my God;
   come quickly, God, to help me.
May my accusers perish in shame;
   may those who want to harm me
   be covered with scorn and disgrace.
As for me, I will always have hope;
   I will praise you more and more.
My mouth will tell of your righteous deeds,
   of your saving acts all day long—
   though I know not how to relate them all.
I will come and proclaim your mighty acts, Sovereign Lord;
   I will proclaim your righteous deeds, yours alone.
Since my youth, God, you have taught me,
   and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.
Even when I am old and gray,
   do not forsake me, my God,
till I declare your power to the next generation,
   your mighty acts to all who are to come.
Your righteousness, God, reaches to the heavens,
   you who have done great things.
   Who is like you, God?
Though you have made me see troubles,
   many and bitter,
   you will restore my life again;
from the depths of the earth
   you will again bring me up.
You will increase my honor
   and comfort me once more.
I will praise you with the harp
   for your faithfulness, my God;
I will sing praise to you with the lyre,
   Holy One of Israel.
My lips will shout for joy
   when I sing praise to you—
   I whom you have delivered.
My tongue will tell of your righteous acts
   all day long,
for those who wanted to harm me
   have been put to shame and confusion.

Devotional Thought

Yesterday, coming home on a crowded airline flight, my attention was captured by a young mother and her baby boy. How fragile, how absolutely dependent for survival he was, and how marvelous. Studying him, thinking about his promise and his hope for the future, I could not escape the fact that God became just like him. As always, I was uncomfortable with the thought, as I am uncomfortable with all the other truths of my faith that hang on this central mystery of God's love saving us from inside our own flesh and bone, nerve and muscle, mind and heart. How can I comprehend such grace? Yet, if we are to be saved from the consequences of permitting the nuclear competition that is driving us to destruction, it will be as a consequence of grace, the gift to accept ourselves as we truly are: fragile, weak, disordered yet loved and loving, a little less than the angels, entrusted with each other's lives. How delicate is the balance on which our survival depends!

— Mary Evelyn Jegen, SND

2 Corinthians 4:1-15

Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.

Reflection

Take time to pause and reflect on your time with Jesus through the Scriptures and devotional thought.  What thoughts are being drawn out of you?  What emotions are being provoked?  What might God be saying?  Consider using a journal to write as you process, reflect, and pray.

Time for Prayer

God invites us to cast our cares on him because he cares for us.  God is all-together good, already knows what we need, and is eager to give us good things.  So we don’t need to pray out of anxiety or fear, but confident trust.  Spend a few minutes making your requests known to God.

Closing Prayer

Thank you, my Lord, for choosing me to serve as one of your kingdom workers. I am your willing servant. Let your life flow through me according to your will. Amen.
